ranked by NDTV) and end with Radhika Roy Prannoy Roy Private Limited (RRPR),
which owns 29 per cent stakes in NDTV, suggests that Network 18 is not the only
network that Mukesh Ambani and Reliance bailed out.

unsecured loan of Rs 403.85 crore to Shinano Retail Private Limited, which is
effectively fully owned by Reliance Industrial Investments and Holdings Limited
(RIIHL). RIIHL is part of RIL.In the same financial year, Shinano Retail
Private Limited extended a loan of exactly the same amount to a company called
Vishvapradhan Commercial Private Limited.Curiously, Vishvapradhan Commercial
Private Limited shared the same address (2nd Floor, Chitrakoot, Shreeram Mills
Premises, Ganpatrao Kadam Marg, Worli, Mumbai) as Shinano Retail Private
Limited when the transaction took place. Both their addresses have changed
since.During the period when the transaction took place, the directors of the
company were Ashwin Khasgiwala and Kalpana Srinivasan. According to Khasgiwala’s
Linkedin profile, he is Chief Financial Officer, Reliance Retails and Vice
President – Finance & Accounts, RIL. He has
held the latter position since February, 1998. Srinivasan’s
Linkedin profile says that she is currently a Company Secretary at RIL.All of
the aforementioned financial information has been accessed through public
documents that are available with the Registry of Companies, Ministry of
Corporate Affairs.Radhika Roy Prannoy Roy Private Limited’s
balance sheet for the same year, which Newslaundry has examined, mentions an
unsecured loan that the company had received during the 2009-10 fiscal year.
There is, however, no remark whatsoever on the source of the loan: the loan is
again worth Rs 403.85 crore. The amount, to the last zero, is precisely the
same as what Reliance Ventures had extended to Shinano Retail Private Limited

Lalit Modi’s family and friends, most of whom have
already featured in this article, are an integral part of the IPL.
Minal’s sister Kavita is married to Suresh
Chellaram, who owns a majority share in the Rajasthan Royals franchise.
Lalit’s step-daughter Karima is married to
Gaurav, son of Monica and Vivek Burman of the Dabur group. The marriage caused a stir in the Burman family similar to
the one in the Modi family when Lalit and Minal tied the knot. The Burmans have
distanced themselves since then from Gaurav, who first lived in London but now
stays in a disputed four-bedroom flat on Sir Pochkhanawala Road, Worli, rented
for Rs 600 a month by Godfrey Philips from a Parsi trust.
Gaurav is a stakeholder in Global Cricket Venture, a firm
that has the digital, mobile and internet rights of the IPL. His brother Mohit
Burman is a co-owner in Kings XI Punjab, which he owns as part of the
consortium consisting of his childhood friends Karan Paul and Ness Wadia, and
Wadia’s ex-girlfriend Preity Zinta. The
franchise, however, is up for sale now.
BCCI officials say that Modi did not disclose any of these
relationships with franchise stakeholders at the time of the bidding for the
first eight IPL teams.
Incidentally, one of the owners of Kolkata Knight Riders is
also an old friend of Lalit Modi’s. Jay Mehta, son of Mahinder Mehta who
owned Saurashtra Cements, and Lalit are childhood buddies.
Suresh Chellaram, brother-in-law of Lalit Modi (former IPL
chief). As the Rajasthan Royals franchise was the cheapest of the eight
franchises during the team auctions in 2008, it was alleged Chellaram was given
a good deal, owing to his ties with then IPL chief Modi.
The franchise was owned and chaired by British businessman
Manoj Badale. Other investors included Ryan Tkalcevic, Lachlan Murdoch, Aditya
S Chellaram and Suresh Chellaram. The group had bought the franchise for $67
million. In early 2009, Shilpa Shetty and husband Raj Kundra reportedly paid
$15.4 million for an 11.7 per cent stake in the franchise.
In 2010, the Enforcement Directorate had issued show-cause
notices to Rajasthan Royals for alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange
Maintenance Act. It was alleged Chellaram and Shilpa Shetty had flouted foreign
exchange norms, through the Mauritius route.
The efforts by the Mauritius company to invest funds in
Jaipur IPL has been held back since the government is yet to grant permission
seeking the details on source of funds. EM Sports Holding was formed by three
partners—Suresh Chellaram with 50%, Monoj Badale
36.7% and media mogul Rupert Murdoch's eldest son, Lachlan Murdoch the
remaining 13.3%—with a capital of $8 million.
The subsequent 11.7% stake sale to Bal Kishan Kundra and
Usha Rani Kundra in 2009 brought down Chellaram's stake to 44.15% in EM
Sporting Holdings Ltd. Although the investment plans were yet to be approved by
the government, the Jaipur IPL franchisee has been minting money, according to
people familiar with its financials.

Sahay is a Congress MP from
Ranchi. He was the cabinet minister for tourism till 2012. His house in Ranchi,
